On the Freelander 1 it fails because the viscous coupling in the propshaft line seizes and fights it, and the commonest cause of that is one tyre different from the other three. On the Freelander 2, Evoque and Discovery Sport the unit runs hot, the oil breaks down, and the bearings and seals go. Every unit here comes with the advice that stops it happening again, which is four matching tyres at matching pressures and an oil change the factory schedule does not ask for.
